March marks the beginning of Women’s History Month - a time to honor, recognize, and celebrate the incredible accomplishments women have faced and the challenges they overcame. In the world of music, women have faced and risen from a fair share of challenges and shaped the industry into what we know today.
The Rise of Women in Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is a cultural movement and art form that originated in New York City in the 1970s, encompassing beyond music, but also dance, visual art, and fashion, sparking a dynamic revolution that continues to shape society today. While Hip-Hop started as a black male-dominated industry, women in hip-hop have broken barriers, made their mark, and continue to shape the industry as to what it means to be a female artist in an industry that has been dominated by men.
Breaking Into a Male-Dominated Industry
In the early days of hip-hop, female rappers like MC Lyte, Salt-N-Pepa, and Queen Latifah helped lay the foundation for women in the genre. These women proved that hip-hop, which was once ingrained in urban street culture, could also be a space for women to not only participate but soon thrive in with a purpose, many of these artists used their music to address critical social issues and to demand respect for women in the culture. They shaped the industry and society as a whole to push boundaries, challenge gender norms, and create their own space in an industry, and even more, a genre that was at first not welcoming to women.
Dominating the Game in The New Era
In today’s top artists and albums, black women in hip-hop are emerging as some of the most influential female rappers in history, bringing a dynamic and empowering energy to the genre. Nicki Minaj comes to mind and continues to hold a pedestal at the top, with her debut album, Pink Friday, released in 2010, a record-breaking album, naming her the first female rapper to top the Billboard 200.
