Atlanta’s Trap Museum recently gave Moneybagg Yo the distinction of ‘Trapper of the Year’ for 2021, as reported by Hip Hop DX. The museum, founded by Atlanta rapper T.I., hosted an exhibit for Moneybagg Yo to recognize his many accomplishments last year. The Memphis rapper scored his first number one album, A Gangsta’s Pain, which conquered the Billboard 200 with 110,000 total album-equivalent units sold in its first week. For those who believe that Memphis rap has fallen off since the days of Three 6 Mafia, you’re sadly mistaken.
Moneybagg Yo has earned his moment at the top. He started releasing mix tapes as far back as 2012 and by 2016 he was receiving acknowledgement locally: he won a Memphis Hip Hop Award for Mixtape of the Year. Yo continued to grind his way to the top and in 2017 ‘Federal 3X’ became his first project to debut in the Top 20. He did it again in 2018 with ‘2 Heartless’ and in April of 2021 ‘Gangsta’s Pain’ hit the top spot. Moneybagg Yo is again proving that Memphis is a city to be taken seriously and that hard work and commitment to the craft are what makes stars.
