Music records have been sold in one form or another for a very long time. To crack the top 10 list for album sales is a huge deal, especially for a genre as young as hip hop: most would date the category only to the 1970s. What it lacks in age, however, hip hop makes up for in popularity. Today it is the #1 genre of music and two of its creations crack the top 10 list: Outkast’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” (2003) and Eminem’s “Eminem: The Marshall Mathers LP” (2000). In a short time hip hop, David, has taken down its share of Goliaths.
Michael Jackon’s 1982 release “Thriller” is safely #1 of all time, having sold 66 million albums. Miles Davis rounds out the top 10 with his 1959 classic “Kind of Blue,” which sold 4 million copies. Justin Timberlake and the great Sam Cooke don’t crack the top 10 but Outkast comes in at number 9 with 11 million copies sold and Eminem at number 8 with 21 million copies of his record sold. Two rap acts have outsold the great Luther Vandross, the Beatles, The Temptations and Garth Brooks. A genre that has only been considered “mainstream” for a couple of decades has leapfrogged so many others that have been standing for centuries. This is no fluke, it’s a movement.
